Picture of Donkey Named Abu Sabber Abu Sabber
Lucy saw little Abu Sabber (whose name is Arabic for “father of Sabber”, although he’s much too little to be anyone’s father) being dragged along by a cart being pulled by another donkey in the village of Tayibe on 14th February 2006. Abu Sabber’s owners didn’t want him so Lucy took him back to Safe Haven. It later came to light that Abu Sabber is the son of Saskia, previously rescued by Lucy.

Picture of Donkey Named Amal Amal
Amal was brought in to Safe Haven's Qalqilya clinic in November 2009 having been taken away from some boys who were abusing her by a Qalqilya horse owner. She was covered in abscesses but after an intensive course of treatment at the sanctuary she will soon be on the mend and Lucy is sure she will overcome her initial timidity.

Picture of Donkey Named Amnon Amnon
Rescued in 2002 and the first donkey to have an Israeli name, named after the husband of a supporter who, during the Second World War, refused to blow up a farm where a stray donkey was sheltering

Picture of Donkey Named Arthur Arthur
Arthur was about 11 years old when he came to Safe Haven in November 2008. He used to pull his owner's cart to sell his vegetables every day in Tayibe until he injured his left front leg. Arthur's owner brought him to SHADH's clinic in Tayibe but when he realised that Arthur would not be able to work again, he handed him over to Lucy.

Picture of Donkey Named Basil Basil
You've heard of Basil Brush, now meet "Basil Brash"! Taken into the sanctuary at the beginning of 2010, Basil had previously been found as a stray and taken in by a family who called Lucy because they could no longer cope with his aggressive behaviour. Basil literally attacks anything and anyone in his path but Lucy suspects this is down to how he has been treated in the past and feels sure that after a spell at Safe Haven he will calm down and be a lovely, peaceable, member of the donkey family.

Picture of Donkey Named Beauty Beauty
Lucy had known this poor mule since the summer of 2005 as he was a patient at the Tayibe resting station and nicknamed him "Beauty", although everybody else failed to agree. In the summer of 2006 Beauty's condition deteriorated and after advice from Lucy, Beauty's owner rested him and he was in much better shape for a while. Sadly however, at the end of the year Beauty collapsed - malnourished and beaten - and Lucy brought him home to Safe Haven where he is now enjoying his new life of freedom.

Picture of Donkey Named Benjy Benjy
Rescued in June 2003 as a foal with his mother Sheba from the village of Jisr Azarka, Benjy’s mouth was so badly torn it needed stitches.

Picture of Donkey Named Billy Billy
Billy was rescued from a village in the south of where he was found as a stray in November 2005. Billy had been so badly beaten that there was a hole in his head just above the eye socket where you could see all the way to the bone. This wound has of course now been treated and Billy is recovering at the sanctuary.

Picture of Donkey Named Bindi Bindi
Bindi was found abandoned in one of the villages where Lucy and the team hold their veterinary clinics and taken back to Safe Haven. Although very young and still needing her mother's milk, Bindi had already learned to chew at grass, probably in sheer desperation. Bindi has now been "adopted" by Carla who shares her milk between Bindi and her own foal Valentine.
