Besides making a donation towards the work of the charity, or holding an event to raise funds, there is also the opportunity to work voluntarily at the rescue centre itself
We recommend a short-term visit of approximately five days to one week for first-time volunteers wanting to have a ‘taster’ of the work involved. Further or longer visits may then be arranged, subject to discussion with Lucy Fensom.
As a charity relying on the generosity of the public for the cost of caring for our donkeys, we have to ask our volunteers to pay their airfare to Tel Aviv (costs vary depending on airline but are in the region of £350 from the UK). Volunteers are collected from the airport on arrival and taken to the rescue centre, a drive of just under an hour. A small private annexe with a kitchenette and shower area is provided for volunteers during their stay and a basic welcome pack of groceries is provided, although due to rising costs in Israel we do have to ask our volunteers to make a contribution of £50 per visit towards the cost of fuel, services etc. As a volunteer, no remuneration would be paid.
All volunteers must be over 18 years of age and be in possession of adequate travel insurance.
Israel is a wonderful country to visit and the opportunity to work with the donkeys is a real pleasure. Lucy has created a very tranquil, clean and harmonious sanctuary for her charges. It is essential people working with her appreciate the circumstances the donkeys have been rescued from and be happy to give plenty of love and attention to these gentle creatures, whilst ensuring the sanctuary and its tools are well maintained and supervised.
