Our donkey update – 5th June 2025

A few weeks ago, our vet teams in Egypt marked World Donkey Day with a special event inside one of the brick kilns – bringing donkey owners and handlers together to learn more about how to care for the hardworking animals they rely on every day.

We’re happy to share that it was a great success and today, we’re sharing some photos that Dr Shaaban has sent over to capture the impact of your support in action.

And there’s more good news to come – in the next few weeks, we’ll be updating you on how your generosity is helping us reach even more kilns and care for even more donkeys across Egypt.

Thank you, as always, for everything you do to help donkeys, mules and horses in need. None of our work would be possible without you.

Update from El Saf, Egypt

Every day, the donkeys and mules of El Saf pull heavy loads of bricks in tough conditions. But thanks to your support, our teams are able to deliver free veterinary care to keep them healthy and free from pain.

Out teams celebrated World Donkey Day in the brick kilns – using it as a way of educating owners and handlers about better donkey care.

But your impact doesn’t stop at medical treatment. Our teams also work closely with kiln owners, handlers, and foremen to drive lasting change through education. We help owners and handlers improve the daily care of their donkeys, and encourage more humane treatment of these working animals.

Working donkeys in the brick kilns of El Saf, Egypt, lead hard lives, pulling heavy loads of bricks.

On World Donkey Day, at the El Hoda kiln, our team led a session on preventing heatstroke, a growing risk in the summer heat. With our teams’ guidance, handlers learned that simply offering buckets of water straight after work can make a big difference.

Water at the end of a hot day can make the world of difference to a working donkey – our team are guiding donkey handlers to put in place these simple solutions.

The day ended with a wonderful gesture: the handlers and kiln owner made a special “cake” of clover, carrots, and cucumbers as a treat for their donkeys. This was a joyful moment for our teams – showing that their guidance and advice was having a real impact.

The donkeys received a special treat on World Donkey Day – their handlers and owners created this ‘donkey cake’ made of carrots, clover and cucumber.

Every day, our dedicated vet teams are working in the kilns providing free veterinary care to donkeys and mules who endure some of the harshest working conditions imaginable.

From treating painful wounds and lameness to offering essential procedures like deworming and tooth rasping, they’re not only relieving suffering – they’re also helping handlers and owners to see what a difference proper care can make.

Our vet teams in Egypt work tirelessly to provide care – and education – in the brick kilns of El Saf.

But the impact of your donations go even further.

Beyond the kilns, our vets are also training veterinary students, government vets, farriers, and harness makers, sharing vital skills and knowledge in the wider Giza region.

This combination of hands-on care and community education is building a foundation for lasting change – not just for today, but for generations of working animals to come.

Your kindness is creating a better, kinder future for working donkeys, every single day.

Fresh greens are now available in 75% of the kilns we work in – a simple step towards better health and happier lives for donkeys and mules, made possible thanks to you.

Thank you ♥️♥️

Everything our vet teams do to support working donkeys, mules, and horses is only possible because of you. Your generosity helps us protect animals and support their owners across the West Bank, Gaza, and Egypt – as well as care for rescued donkeys at our sanctuary in Israel and our rescue centre and hospital in the West Bank.

Thank you for making this vital work possible.
