Our donkey update – 16th October 2025

In recent weeks, three new rescue donkeys have been welcomed at our sanctuary in Israel. Each has their own story, and over the coming weeks we’ll be sharing more updates as they settle in and begin their new lives in their forever home.

This week we have also seen progress in Gaza. A ceasefire has brought a moment of hope – and long awaited news that our latest shipment of food and medicines will finally reach Dr Saif and his team in early November.

In the meantime, the team continue to respond to an overwhelming number of calls for help – to provide urgent care to donkeys, mules and horses who have nowhere else to turn. We will bring you an update from Gaza very soon.

Thank you for being part of this lifesaving work.

News from our Sanctuary in Israel

The first rescue call came on 26th September about a donkey who could no longer walk properly due to lameness in one leg. Her owner – a woman deeply concerned for her donkey’s welfare – agreed that the kindest option was to bring her into our care.

Our first new arrival starts to settle in to her new home

Once at the sanctuary, she was examined, microchipped, dewormed and vaccinated. Our vet diagnosed an infection in her joint and began treatment while further tests were arranged. Soon she was safe, resting in quarantine, and receiving all the care she needed.

Our new rescue receives vaccinations to keep her safe and well

Just two days later, on 28th September, a woman in a northern Negev village contacted us about an abandoned donkey near her home. We asked her to offer temporary shelter until our team could arrive – and that same evening, the young donkey was transported safely to our sanctuary.

Our second rescue was found by someone’s home

Around two years old, she is around seven months pregnant. We have called her Deborah, and she was also microchipped, dewormed and vaccinated against tetanus and rabies.

Our second rescue – Deborah – is two years old and seven months pregnant

Our two new rescue donkeys have now finished their time in isolation and are settling in beautifully.

Our vet wanted to x-ray the white donkey’s fetlock and discovered arthritis in her fetlock joint – likely the cause of her earlier lameness. We’re pleased to say our team are managing her condition with ongoing care and pain relief, ensuring she stays as comfortable as possible.

Our vet takes an x-ray and diagnoses arthritis, whilst Moussa provides reassurance

Our other rescue donkey, Deborah, continues to do well, and is calm and content at the sanctuary. Donkeys are usually pregnant for 11–14.5 months, so we’re expecting her foal sometime in the next few months. We will of course keep you posted on the new arrival!

Deborah has now left isolation and is starting to make new friends

We’ll soon be sharing news of our third new arrival – a beautiful young foal – once she settles in and begins her own journey to recovery.

Thank you, as always, for helping to make all our work possible – and being a vital part of our team caring for rescue donkeys like Deborah.

Thank you ♥️♥️

Because of you, our mobile vet teams in the West Bank can reach donkeys like this one – bringing treatment, relief and care where it’s needed most. Your generosity also helps our mobile teams in Gaza and Egypt, and ensures the rescued donkeys at our sanctuaries in Israel and the West Bank receive the daily care they deserve.

All our work is only possible because of you. Thank you for giving so many animals the chance of a better, healthier life.

We are only able to take in new rescue donkeys thanks to your support
