Frozen in pain, muscles locked tight, and struggling for every breath. 💔 That was the heartbreaking reality for the donkey our team found in the refugee camps of western Khan Yunis.
Our Team first reached this donkey in the heart of western Khan Yunis. He was suffering from a severe case of tetanus – his body was frozen and he was in absolute agony from the muscle contractions. Because tetanus is life-threatening, the donkey required intensive treatment and regular follow-up visits from our mobile vet team to monitor his progress and ensure he pulls through.
Donkeys like this face harsh realities in refugee camps – limited veterinary care, demanding work, and life-threatening illnesses. This is why we need you to join us in saying “Donkeys Do Deserve Better!”
We need your support as we fight for better living conditions, access to basic medical care and treatment of hard-working donkeys.
Safe Haven for Donkeys was set up in 2000 to help the thousands of working donkeys in Israel and the West Bank. Today, our sanctuary in Israel provides life-long care to around 180 unwanted and abused donkeys. We also run a rescue centre in Arrana, in the West Bank, which is home to donkeys who have suffered abuse and neglect.
Beyond our sanctuaries, our three mobile vet teams help hundreds of working donkeys, mules, and horses across the West Bank each month, supported by a permanent clinic in Nablus. Recently, we introduced a first-aid mobile vet team in Gaza and began a partnership in Egypt to ease the suffering of donkeys working in the El Saf brick kilns.
We are the only organisation dedicated to the welfare of working and abandoned donkeys in these regions. Your money goes directly to help animals; apart from a small UK-based fundraising team, all funds are used for the care and treatment of donkeys in Israel, the West Bank, Gaza, and Egypt.

If you are UK a taxpayer, once you have made your donation, please complete a Gift Aid declaration to allow us to reclaim an extra 25p for every pound donated from the Inland Revenue. If claiming Gift Aid, you must read this.
During the last year, Safe Haven has been able to reclaim £25,000 from the Inland Revenue – that’s enough to pay for a veterinary surgeon to visit the sanctuary every day – so as you can see, “Gift Aiding” your donations really would make a massive difference to our work!
