Khaled, the manager of Safe Haven's clinic in the Palestinian town of Qalqilya, had received permission to visit Israel at the end of August 2013 for a few days.  Whilst in the Israeli Arab village of Tira, he came across two badly neglected donkeys.  Khaled sprang into action, persuaded the owner (who admitted starving the poor animals) to part with them and after giving them a much-needed hoof trimming, brought them back to Safe Haven's sanctuary.  The donkeys, both very dark brown, are Marmite, a male about 3 years old, and Twiggy his mother.
