Thank you for caring ♥️ These are difficult times for working donkeys in the West Bank and Palestinian territories.

Donkeys like Rita face overwork, neglect and cruelty on a daily basis. Often lame, injured or malnourished. Beaten or with pressure sores from badly-fitting harnesses they still have to keep going or get discarded and abandoned when unable to work.

Donkey Rita
We rescued this donkey and took her to our sanctuary, where we discovered she had a very serious injury that sadly could not be fixed. We called her Rita and gave her all the love and pain relief she needed. In the sanctuary, she gave birth to a foal, we named HOPE. Rita and Hope spent over a year together until Rita’s health sadly got seriously bad and pain relief was no longer working. We did the kindest, but hardest thing and put her to sleep. She passed surrounded by all those that loved her and her foal Hope who was a year old. Rita was not alone in the end – she experienced love and she knew her foal, Hope was safe and well. With your help we did all we could to make Rita’s life better for as long as we could.

Unlike your local donkeys, donkeys like Rita work each day in unimaginable pain. Hardly ever heard to complain. Every day is alike, they never stop. Worked on and on until they drop.

Here at Safe Haven for Donkeys over 250 abandoned, injured and traumatised donkeys have found refuge at our sanctuary located near the Israeli town of Netanya. A sanctuary where discarded donkeys can live a life full of love and care they so much need. With your help we provide free veterinary care to working donkeys, mules and horses in towns and villages across the Palestinian Territories. In order to bring about long-term changes in attitudes towards these humble beasts of burden, education sessions for owners and local veterinary students are also a vital part of what we do.

We are the only organisation dedicated to the welfare of working and abandoned donkeys in Israel and the West Bank and have been here for the donkeys for the past 20 years.

We can only bring this much needed help with your help and kind donations.
