Our donkey update – 11th December 2025

Thank you for caring for working donkeys, mules and horses across Egypt.

Because of your support, our two vet teams in the brick kilns can reach animals who have no one else to rely on. Every week we see the difference you make – and in today’s e-news, Dr Shaaban has shared three recent cases that show just how important this work is.

And if you’re still looking for a thoughtful Christmas gift, it’s not too late to buy a donkey adoption. UK supporters have until 17th December to order a postal pack. For last-minute gifts – or for friends and family living overseas – a digital adoption arrives instantly and is ready to gift.

Thank you so much for all your support.

News from our teams in Egypt

During a community visit near the brick kilns, we were asked to help a donkey who had suffered a deep wound to his front after a buffalo struck out with their horn. When we arrived, the donkey needed urgent treatment. Once sedated, we cleaned the wound and removed damaged tissue to stop infection taking hold, then stitched it carefully to give him the best chance of healing.

The donkey’s injury was severe – so Dr Shaaban soon set to work to clean and stitch the wound.

He still needs time to recover, but he’s doing well and our team is giving him the follow up care he needs. It’s a clear reminder that working animals rely on our vets not just in the kilns, but in surrounding villages too. We hope to extend our work in the community in 2026 – and will bring you news very soon.

The donkey was soon back on his feet – the wound was severe so a drain was left in to assist with healing.

On a routine kiln visit, the stockman told us about an 11-year-old donkey who could barely walk. Our examination showed the issue was a hoof abscess hidden deep under the ‘frog’. The donkey’s stable floor was far too muddy, which likely caused the infection.

The hoof was x-rayed to see how deep the abscess was. The team then provided treatment, along with antibiotics and pain relief.

We put a full hoof-care plan in place with regular hoof baths, flushing the abscess, protective bandages, antibiotics and pain relief, plus strict rest. Little by little, he improved. The swelling went down, the pain eased and soon he was walking comfortably again.

The donkey will continue to provide treatment and is under strict rest while he recovers – here you can see the front right hoof with the abscess.

Another recent case treated by the team was a donkey from the kilns who was clearly in distress with a painful abscess, fever and dehydration.

Dr Shaaban, assisted by Moharram, treat the donkey’s painful abscess.

We drained and cleaned the abscess, gave fluids to tackle the dehydration and started antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. Daily wound care supported the healing and each day he grew brighter. We’re pleased to say he’s now fully recovered.

The donkey is now fully recovered – and his abscess is completely healed. A great outcome.

Everything our Egypt teams do – from emergency wound care to providing antibiotics and fluids – is only possible because of your support. Every bandage, every medication and every follow up visit is funded by donors like you.

Thank you ♥️♥️

Your kindness funds our hard working vet teams across Egypt, the West Bank and Gaza, giving urgent first aid to donkeys, mules and horses who have nowhere else to turn. And it ensures the rescued donkeys in our sanctuaries in Israel and the West Bank receive the daily care they depend on.

Thank you for making sure these gentle animals get the care they need, exactly when they need it.

Our work continues to expand thanks to your support. We will bring you news of our exciting plans for Egypt very soon, in 2026.
