Our donkey update – 21st November 2024

Thanks to you and our donors who have donated through the post, we have now raised funds to support a second vet team along with our other work in the brick kilns of El Saf. We can’t thank you enough – it’s only thanks to your generosity that we can now commit to a permanent team in 2025.

I’m sure you’ll agree this is amazing news for the donkeys and mules who would otherwise suffer with awful wounds and injuries in the brick kilns. If you’d like to read more about our appeal, and find out more our second vet team, please click here.

You will see some very healthy bottoms in the photo above! Dr Shaaban has sent this over to show the positive impact of our work in the brick kilns – these donkeys look healthy and show no signs of beatings or wounds. A positive step forward in their welfare.

News from Egypt

Thanks to your support, we have now established our second veterinary team permanently in the brick kilns of El Saf, Egypt. This is already having an impact on our ability to help donkeys – including freeing up Dr Shaaban’s time to attend two call outs to emergency cases.

Dr Shaaban examines a 14 year old mare

Dr Shaaban received a call from a donkey owner – his 14 year old mare needed urgent veterinary treatment following a bite from another donkey. The wound had formed a painful abscess causing a fever and also lethargy. The poor donkey had stopped eating and was dehydrated. Dr Shaaban sedated the mare and drained the abscess. Our team also provided fluid therapy, pain relief and antibiotics to support her recovery.

Following treatment the donkey was much more comfortable

The mare’s owner was extremely grateful to our team for providing such vital veterinary care to his donkey who has now fully recovered.

Working conditions in the kilns are extremely challenging for both donkeys and people and cart accident are unfortunately very common. The team were also called out to provide emergency care to a badly injured donkey; upon their arrival they found the donkey on the ground in obvious pain.

Dr Shaaban quickly set to work, providing a thorough examination

A very thorough examination taking more than two hours, and including x-rays, revealed fractures in two of the donkey’s feet. Dr Shaaban administered deep sedation, and a nerve blocker, allowing him to apply a hoof cast. The donkey was given pain relief and the owner was asked to give him complete rest in his stable.

X-rays identified fractures in two of the donkey’s feet

We’re very pleased to say that after a week of rest the donkey is showing steady signs of improvement. Without our vet teams in El Saf, this type of treatment wouldn’t be readily available and donkeys would be left in pain.

The donkey is now recovering thanks to Dr Shaaban’s team

We’re so glad we were able to help this donkey. And thank you for all your support – without you treatment like this just wouldn’t be possible.

Thank you ♥️♥️

t’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in the West Bank, Gaza and Egypt. You’re also helping to fund our hospital in Nablus in the West Bank and care for our rescue donkeys in Arrana, as well as our donkeys at our sanctuary in Israel.

Thanks to your support we can now provide emergency veterinary care to donkeys like these. Thank you so much for caring.
