Our donkey update – 24th July 2025

Our mobile vet teams – whether in the West Bank, Gaza, or Egypt – never hesitate to go above and beyond to improve animal welfare.

This week we’ll bring you an update from Dr Rakan’s team, who ran a rabies vaccination clinic from our hospital base in Nablus, in the West Bank, as well as a visit to our rescue centre in Arrana.

As always, your support makes all of this work possible. Which is why we’re keen to hear your views. Later today you’ll receive an email with a link to our supporter survey. Your feedback is incredibly important to us, so I hope you take five minutes to send us your views.

Looking ahead, we’ll be launching a special appeal next week to support our heroic team in Gaza. We’ll be sharing Dr Saif’s latest diary, offering a first-hand glimpse into daily life and animal care in Gaza right now.

Thank you, as ever, for everything you do for donkeys, mules, horses. With your help, we’re able to reach thousands of animals in need.

News from the West Bank

A few weeks ago, Dr Rakan helped to organise a dedicated rabies vaccination campaign. This initiative focused on protecting not just donkeys, horses, and mules – but also domestic animals such as dogs and cats.

Rabies is sadly increasing in the West Bank, so this vaccination drive is vital to protect local animal populations.

Rabies cases have sadly increased recently among stray animals, especially dogs and cats, in our community. In response, the Palestinian Agricultural Ministry kindly provided free rabies vaccines for all mammals at risk – and Dr Rakan was keen to help, ensuring as many donkeys, mules and horses as possible received a vaccine.

Vaccines were administered to domestic animals too.

All animals were cared for – including cats and dogs

On Thursday 10th July, our Nablus hospital clinic opened its doors  and served as the main centre for the vaccination campaign in eastern Nablus. The team had a fantastic turnout with over 150 animals receiving their rabies vaccine, thanks to the hard work of nearly 13 veterinarians, veterinary students, and technicians who volunteered their time and expertise to assist Dr Rakan.

The vet team helped to deliver over 150 vaccines during the rabies vaccine drive.

The donkeys at our rescue centre in Arrana didn’t miss out. Despite the ongoing issues with road blocks in the West Bank causing issues with travel, Dr Rakan and Wael travelled up to make sure our residents there received their rabies vaccines too.

Our resident donkeys are very inquisitive – here they are watching Dr Rakan and Wael arriving at the rescue centre.

During the visit, Dr Rakan carried out general health checks and Wael carried out hoof trimming for the donkeys.

Dr Rakan gets the vaccines ready to administer.

Here you can see Dr Rakan with his namesake, Rakan the donkey – we’re pleased to say is in excellent health.

Afterwards, the donkeys enjoyed a few of their favourite treats carrot treats – a body brush and some head rubs.

We always do our best to reach every working donkey animal who needs us, as well as caring for the rescue donkeys whose forever home is at our sanctuaries. With your support we can show them the care and kindness they truly deserve.

Our donkeys receive the best possible care – all thanks to you.

Thank you ♥️♥️

Everything our vet teams do to support working donkeys, mules, and horses is only possible because of you. Your generosity helps us protect animals and support their owners across the West Bank, Gaza, and Egypt – as well as care for rescued donkeys at our sanctuary in Israel and our rescue centre and hospital in the West Bank.

Thank you for making this vital work possible.

Your support helps us feed and care for all the donkeys at our Sanctuary and at our Rescue Centre in the West Bank – thank you.
