Our donkey update – 30th October 2025

This week, I want to thank you for the difference you’re making for working donkeys in Egypt.

Your support enables our dedicated vet teams to provide daily care for donkeys in the brick kilns – and to respond to emergencies when animals are in urgent need. The donkeys of El Saf work in some of the toughest environments imaginable, so your help ensures they receive the care and compassion they deserve.

Thanks to you, our vets are bringing comfort, healing and hope.

News from El Saf, Egypt

In a small village near the brick kilns, our second mobile vet team received an emergency call about a one-month-old foal in distress. He was rolling on the ground in pain, unable to suckle, and was visibly distressed. His frantic mother stood by, helpless.

When Dr Khaled, who heads up our second vet team in Egypt, arrived, he found the foal in a critical condition – severely dehydrated, constipated and in excruciating abdominal pain. His tiny heart was racing dangerously fast. Every minute counted if they were to save him.

Dr Khaled soon set to work – helping the distressed foal

For almost three hours, Dr Khaled fought to stabilise him. Fluids and plasma were administered, pain relief given, and paraffin oil used to ease the blockage. Bit by bit, his pain began to subside – and finally, his gut started to function again.

By the end of the visit, the foal was able to suckle from his mother once more. For our team, seeing that precious moment was a powerful reminder of why their work – and your support – matters so deeply.

Back on his feet again – the little foal was given a second chance

During one of our visits to the brick kilns, our vets examined a 16-year-old working donkey struggling to stand. Years of hoof problems had left him lame and in constant pain. We suspected a painful keratoma – a non-cancerous tumour inside the hoof wall.

Under sedation, our vets performed a hoof wall resection to remove the infected tissue and clean the area before applying a protective bandage. Within just four days, the donkey was standing comfortably again – a remarkable recovery.

Thanks to ongoing work like regular hoof trimming and other veterinary care, cases like these are becoming less common in El Saf. With your continued support, we can keep improving life for the hardworking donkeys who need us most.

Thank you ♥️♥️

Everything our vet teams achieve – from saving a foal’s life to helping an injured working donkey in the El Saf brick kilns – is only possible because of you.

Your generosity keeps our mobile vet clinics running in Egypt, the West Bank and Gaza, and ensures rescued donkeys in our sanctuaries in Israel and the West Bank receive the daily care they need.

Thank you for helping to bring comfort and healing to all the donkeys who depend on us.

The El Saf brick kiln donkey with the hoof tumour is now fully recovered – all thanks to your support
