Our donkey update – 8th May 2025

This week, we’re bringing you an update from our hardworking veterinary teams in El Saf, Egypt – where donkeys working in the brick kilns face tough conditions every day.

From emergency treatments to ongoing care, none of this vital work would be possible without your support.

News from Egypt

This 11 year old donkey works in the El Saf brick kilns – one of ten donkeys at a ‘yellow kiln’, a brick kiln where working conditions are tough, but basic welfare is in place.

Our work in the brick kilns of El Saf helps so many donkeys in need of veterinary care.

After a fight with another male donkey, he was left with two deep wounds on his hind leg. He was badly lame, in pain, and struggling to walk. X-rays showed something even more serious – a bone infection. Dr Shaaban’s vet team immediately set to work to help the donkey.

Dr Shaaban x-rays the donkey’s leg.

Dr Shaaban cleaned and dressed the wound, bandaged the leg and started the donkey on a course of antibiotics and pain relief. Since this first visit, we’ve continued his care, returning to remove unhealthy tissue and treatment until the donkey was fully healed.

Dr Shaaban bandages the leg to keep it clean and aid recovery.

We’re pleased to say that today, the donkey is back on his feet, walking comfortably and free from pain.

Our team were pleased to see the donkey has made a full recovery.

Thanks to your support, we now have a second vet team in Egypt – which means we can reach even more animals through our mobile clinics. Here, you can see the team treating a donkey with tendonitis.

Our vet team are able to take the mobile vet clinics into the local community too.

The local children were keen to get involved and learn how to better care for their animals. One young boy, concerned about the heat – it was 42°C that day – asked for water for the donkeys we were treating. Moments like these give us hope for the future of animal welfare in the community.

In 42°C heat, a local boy asks for water for the donkey – a small act of kindness that means a lot.

It’s your support that makes all of this work possible – not just providing vital vet care, but helping to inspire the next generation to show kindness and compassion to working animals. Thank you for being part of our work.

Thank you ♥️♥️

It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in the West Bank, Gaza and Egypt. You’re also helping to fund our hospital in Nablus in the West Bank and care for our rescue donkeys in Arrana, as well as our donkeys at our sanctuary in Israel.

If you’ve already donated to our Easter Equip a Vet Appeal thank you so much – but there’s still time to donate to help fund vital medications and equipment like bandages, antibiotics and pain relief, so our teams can treat animals in urgent need.
