Our donkey update – 21st May 2026

Thank you so much for your continued support for donkeys, horses and mules in desperate need.

Today, I wanted to share an update from Dr Rakan, who heads up one of our mobile veterinary teams in the West Bank. Thanks to your kindness, Dr Rakan was able to reach a tiny seven-day-old foal who was critically weak and at risk of dying from dehydration.

As you’ll see below, the right treatment at the right moment completely changed her chances of survival.

Thank you again for helping us reach donkeys in remote communities, who would otherwise have nowhere to turn.

Update from the West Bank

A few weeks ago, Dr Rakan travelled 109 kilometres to the village of Deir Sudan, near Ramallah, where he treated 17 working animals belonging to local families.

But one case quickly became urgent. A tiny foal, just seven days old, was suffering from severe diarrhoea and had become dangerously weak.

The foal was weak and in desperate need of fluids.

Young foals can lose fluids extremely quickly and without treatment, dehydration can become life-threatening in a matter of hours.

When Dr Rakan arrived, the foal was lying on the ground exhausted and unable to stand to feed from her mother. Although a local vet had already visited and given antibiotics and vitamins, the underlying dehydration had not yet been treated.

Dr Rakan soon got to work helping the foal – assisted by the foal’s owners.

The team immediately began intravenous fluid therapy to rehydrate her, alongside electrolytes and vitamins to help stabilise her condition. They also left medication and clear follow-up instructions with the owner to support her recovery over the coming days.

Thankfully, the treatment worked quickly. Before long, the little foal was back on her feet and went straight to her mother to nurse. It was a wonderful moment for everyone there – and a powerful reminder of how vital rapid veterinary care can be.

Just this week, Dr Rakan has shared a new video with us – showing the foal happy and healthy. You can watch it here or by clicking the button above.

Thank you for helping Dr Rakan and our two other teams headed up by Dr Omran and Dr Eyed reach animals like this foal across the West Bank.

Thank you ♥️♥️

Your support helps us fund our vet teams in Gaza, the West Bank, and Egypt, bringing vital veterinary treatment directly to working donkeys, mules and horses in desperate need. You are also caring for rescue donkeys at our sanctuaries in Israel and the West Bank, where they receive nutritious food, specialist care, and the safety of a forever home.

Thank you for caring for these gentle animals.

Thanks to your support the foal made a full recovery and is now happy and healthy once again.
