Our donkey update – 28th May 2026

Because of your kindness, we’re able to care for donkeys and horses across Israel, the West Bank, Gaza and Egypt – providing emergency veterinary treatment in crisis areas and lifelong sanctuary care for rescued donkeys who have nowhere else to go.

Today, we wanted to share a little update from our sanctuary in Israel, where there’s been plenty happening among the herd – including the newest arrival, little Gervais venturing outdoors.

Thank you again for making all of this possible.

Update from the Sanctuary in Israel

Our newest foal, Gervais, is growing in confidence every single day. Since being born in April, she’s become a much-loved little member of the herd and is already developing a cheeky personality of her own.

Gervais is very friendly – here she is with Moussa

At first, Gervais was nervous of the camera, but now she’s more than happy to stop and pose for her latest close-up before trotting off again.

Gervais is getting used to the camera – here she is posing!

Meanwhile, Theodora – who stayed close to Deborah throughout her pregnancy – has now moved to another part of the sanctuary following Gervais’ arrival. She’s struck up a lovely friendship with another very special donkey – wonderful Burnie.

Theodora has found a new buddy! Here she is with Burnie (wearing his coat).

As you may know, Burnie has been with us since surviving a horrific act of cruelty in 2007, when he was deliberately set alight. He suffered severe burns to his belly and back and still needs ongoing care and protective ointment today, which is why you’ll often see him wearing a coat.

Burnie has been at the Sanctuary nearly 20 years now – he still wears a coat to protect his scars.

Seeing Burnie safe, cared for and enjoying companionship with Theodora means so much to the team.

Meanwhile, for the rest of the herd, it’s very much business as usual – heading out for food, grazing together in the sunshine, enjoying their best lives.

Thank you for helping to care for our rescue donkeys. It means the world to them.

Thank you ♥️♥️

Your support helps us fund our vet teams in Gaza, the West Bank, and Egypt, bringing vital veterinary treatment directly to working donkeys, mules and horses in desperate need. You are also caring for rescue donkeys at our sanctuaries in Israel and the West Bank, where they receive nutritious food, specialist care, and the safety of a forever home.

Thank you for caring for these gentle animals.

Gervais and Deborah recently ventured outdoors at the Sanctuary – they’re still separate to the rest of the herd for now, and will be introduced gradually.
