Our donkey update – 23rd May 2024

As the temperature continues to climb in Egypt, our team have been treating a number of cases of donkeys with signs of heat stroke this week. You can read an update from Dr Shaaban – including news of a donkey with an eye ulcer.

We hope you enjoy seeing the impact of your support – it truly is appreciated by everyone at Safe Haven.

As temperatures climbed to 48 degrees, our vet team were able to provide help to donkeys in distress.

News from Egypt

With temperatures in Egypt hitting 48 degrees this week, with high humidity in the brick kilns, many working donkeys were showing signs of heat stroke when our vet team visited.

As the donkeys were working from very early in the morning through to 2pm without any breaks.

Our team were able to talk to the owners about providing free access to water and introducing regular breaks.

Dr Shaaban was also asked to examine a donkey with eye problems – and he immediately diagnosed a corneal eye ulcer.

The donkey was given antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, along with a fly mask to protect his eye. Dr Shaaban also asked the owner to rest the donkey until his eye is better.

Thank you!

It’s only with your help we are able to improve the lives of working donkeys, mules and horses in Egypt, the West Bank, and Gaza, as well as care for all the animals at our sanctuary in Israel, and our rescue centre and hospital over in the West Bank.

We hope this update has helped to show you how your donations are helping donkeys in desperate need – thank you for your support!
