Our donkey update – 7th September 2023

News from El Saf, Egypt

Thanks to your support we have fully invested in the new project and the team are visiting more brick kilns, six days a week, helping working donkeys in desperate need. You can see the impact of your support below.

Below you can see one of five donkeys that Dr Shaaban and this vet team visited last week. They were showing signs of colic, with a wobbly gait, rapid breathing, swelling around their muzzle, and two had slightly dilated pupils.

Dr Shaaban’s team treated them with fluids, vitamins, antibiotics and other medicines – including plasma for the donkey who was very poorly.

Just a week later, Dr Shaaban was pleased to report (yesterday) that the donkeys have all shown a vast improvement. The owners consider it nothing short of a miracle!

On Dr Shaaban’s advice, the owners have now introduced more green food into their donkeys’ diet.

The team have also been treating some awful wounds, caused by poor harnessing. You can see Dr Shaaban treating a donkey with a very nasty wound around its tail. We haven’t included more graphic photos but the wound is extremely deep and needed field surgery.

Many of the brick kiln donkeys need their teeth rasping – here you can see the mechanical rasper being put to use to help these donkeys. All this work is funded by your support – thank you.

Once again we would like to say a big thank you to you, our supporters. It’s only with your help we are able to care for the donkeys at the Sanctuary in Israel, as well as commit to helping working donkeys in the West Bank and Egypt. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
